SIM 83 – Support for the Development of an Advanced Driving Simulator Using 5G

SIM 83, a micro-enterprise working in the field of advanced driving simulator development, faced the challenge of further developing a prototype that would enable the connection of a real vehicle and real-time data transmission. The key technological challenges included reliable transmission of Full HD video and vehicle telemetry, minimal latency, and precise data synchronisation to ensure a realistic driver training experience.

As part of the EDIH DIGI-SI project, the company received targeted expert support from researchers at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics at the University of Maribor. The consulting support included an assessment of the current development stage of the prototype, identification of technical limitations, and definition of a feasible development plan.

The solution was based on a combination of expert technical consulting, practical testing and access to research infrastructure. Together, various communication approaches were analysed, including Wi-Fi as the primary solution and 5G as a backup option, as well as hardware configurations and the system architecture for synchronising video and telemetry. A test environment was established, and the project concluded with a demonstration of a working prototype.

In addition to technical support, DIGI-SI also acted as a connector within the innovation ecosystem by enabling cooperation between the company and the research sector, while also providing guidance on further development and financing opportunities.

The process began with an analysis of the existing prototype and the definition of the company’s development objectives. This was followed by technical reviews of data transmission requirements, latency measurements, system load analysis and the selection of suitable hardware components. The researchers also supported the design of a digital tachograph and the integration of the company’s existing software solutions.

A phased testing approach was agreed, starting with basic measurements on a smaller vehicle and gradually progressing towards testing in a controlled environment. The final phase included a live demonstration of the prototype at the faculty’s premises.

As a result of EDIH DIGI-SI support, SIM 83 obtained a confirmed proof of concept (PoC) for an advanced driving simulator connected to a real vehicle. The company gained a clear insight into the technical feasibility, system limitations and optimal technological solutions for further development.

The main benefits include:

  • reduced technological risk before larger investments,
  • a clearly defined research and development plan,
  • improved prototype performance,
  • strengthened cooperation with a research institution,
  • greater credibility when presenting the solution to partners, customers and funders.

The service enabled the company to move from the experimental phase towards a more structured and strategically oriented product development process.

The solution contributes to improved road safety and better driver training through the use of advanced simulation technologies. It enables realistic training scenarios and the analysis of driving behaviour, thereby encouraging safer and more energy-efficient driving.

From an economic perspective, the project strengthens the innovation capacity of the micro-enterprise, increases its development potential and contributes to the digital transformation of the regional innovation environment. At the same time, it reinforces cooperation between SMEs and research institutions and demonstrates the concrete added value of EDIH services.
