On Thursday, January 18, 2024, a demystifying seminar on the topic of online user security will be held online from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
As we spend more and more time online, we often encounter various security threats. In addition to online security, we also put our privacy at risk, something we often don’t think about. In this year’s first demystification seminar, we will therefore focus on concepts and technologies that threaten and protect users online and for which it is important that users recognize them, use them or, understand their benefits.
During the seminar, we will discuss various aspects of cyber security. For users to be able to recognize various cyber-attacks, we will devote part of the seminar to these very topics. These will include identity theft, various forms of scams (e.g. phishing), harmful software (e.g. ransomware) and the like. Technologies that can help ensure privacy (eg TOR or VPN) will also be presented. We will look at why passwords are vulnerable and what the conditions are for a password to be secure. We will introduce password managers and why they are good for the overall security of our accounts. We will present more advanced methods of authentication and protection of access to our accounts, such as two-factor authentication and FIDO2 or Passkey, which has the potential to largely replace current forms of online account security in the coming years. We will also present some experiences of larger organizations in the transition to the use of FIDO2.
The seminar will be conducted by dr. Lili Nemec Zlatolas and dr. Marko Kompara from the Laboratory for Data Technologies at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics of the University of Maribor.
