On Tuesday, October 10, 2023, a demystifying seminar on the topic of artificial intelligence in medicine and healthcare will be held online from 12:00 to 16:00.

The development of information technologies has led to an era in which we create, share and exchange increasingly large amounts of data. As the volume of available data exceeds the capabilities of conventional, established computer systems to analyze it efficiently, the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning has become key to tackling this task. Medicine and healthcare are no exception to this, but they bring new challenges and requirements, such as accuracy and reliability, invasiveness of data acquisition, transparency of predictive models, long-term validation, privacy protection and ethical issues. Despite these challenges, medicine and healthcare are very suitable fields for the introduction and use of artificial intelligence methods and techniques, if approached in the right way.

Based on two decades of practical experience in the use of artificial intelligence in medicine, in the seminar we will present what artificial intelligence is and demonstrate some possibilities for its effective use through various examples. In doing so, we will point out some of the traps that inexperienced developers fall too quickly into, who, under the influence of often excessive expectations and unrealistic demands of the environment, see artificial intelligence methods as a new “magical” technology. The seminar will be held by Prof. dr. Vili Podgorelec from the Laboratory for Intelligent Systems at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
