On Tuesday, 24 September 2024, a training seminar on Personal Data Protection and Artificial Intelligence was held. The keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Miha Dvojmoč from the Faculty of Security Sciences, University of Maribor, also serves as the Data Protection Officer (or DPO) of the University of Maribor. 

Prof. Dr. Dvojmoč highlighted the importance of personal data protection in a digital era where artificial intelligence is rapidly gaining prominence. He began by providing an overview of the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA-2) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) drawing attention to their key similarities and distinctions. The presentation also covered rights of individuals concerning personal data protection, the responsibilities of data controllers and processors, and the principles of processing personal data. Afterwards, a portion of the seminar was dedicated to how AI utilizes personal data, with examples of its use from various sectors. Prof. Dr. Dvojmoč also presented the challenges and risks associated with personal data processing in AI systems and thus potential GDPR violations. Additionally, he outlined the role of the Data Protection Officer (DPO) and shared best practices for managing personal data when using AI.
